Certain materials used to make solar panels like silver, copper and lithium, which are produced through mining - gather some carbon footprint. However, the negative environmental impact of solar panels is significantly smaller than fossil fuels - making it the better option for energy. 

  • Solar power harnesses the energy of the sun and converts it into electricity through a series of sophisticated technologies. Here's a closer look at the process: 

    • Solar Panels: At the heart of solar power systems are photovoltaic (PV) panels, which are composed of multiple PV cells made from semiconductor materials like silicon. When sunlight strikes these cells, it excites electrons, creating an electric field. This process generates direct current (DC) electricity. 

    • Direct Current to Alternating Current: The DC electricity produced by the solar panels is not directly usable for most home appliances, which run on alternating current (AC). Therefore, the DC electricity is sent to an inverter. The inverter’s role is to convert DC electricity into AC electricity, making it compatible with the electrical grid and household devices. 

    • Electrical Distribution: Once converted to AC, the electricity is ready to be used. It flows through the home's electrical system, powering appliances, lights, and other devices. Any excess electricity generated can be fed back into the grid, often earning credits through net metering programs. 

    • Monitoring and Optimisation: Modern solar power systems include monitoring tools that track performance and ensure efficiency. These systems often use microinverters or power optimizers to maximize energy output from each panel, adjusting for shading and other factors. 

    • Energy Storage: In addition to solar panels and inverters, many solar power systems include energy storage solutions, such as batteries. These batteries store excess energy produced during sunny periods for use during cloudy days or nighttime, increasing the system's reliability and efficiency. 

  • Solar cells, also known as photovoltaic (PV) cells, are the fundamental building blocks of solar panels. These cells are made from semiconductor materials, such as silicon, which have the unique ability to generate electricity when exposed to sunlight.
